Can Your Zodiac Sign Crack This 3-Digit Code? Only One Combination Works!
A locked box, a three-digit code, and five clues. Everything you need to open the lock is right in front of you—but a quick guess can easily send you in the wrong direction.
Some clues tell you which digits belong in the code. Others tell you where those digits cannot go. Your challenge is to combine all five statements until only one answer remains.
Can you figure out the code before reading the solution? Take your time, keep track of the digits you eliminate, and pay close attention to the difference between a correct digit and a correct position.
The Challenge: Find the Three-Digit Code
Imagine a lock with three numbered wheels. Each wheel can show a digit from 0 to 9, and the code can begin with zero. Use the following clues to find the only combination that satisfies every statement.
- 682: One digit is correct and in the right position.
- 614: One digit is correct but in the wrong position.
- 206: Two digits are correct but in the wrong positions.
- 738: None of the digits are correct.
- 780: One digit is correct but in the wrong position.
Important rule: Every clue gives the exact number of correct digits. If a clue says one digit is correct, the other two digits do not appear anywhere in the code. If it says two digits are correct, the remaining digit is absent.
“Wrong position” means that the digit belongs in the code, but it must occupy a different position from the one shown in that clue.
Before You Scroll: Choose Your Answer
Write down your three-digit combination or keep it in mind. Then test it against all five clues.
Does it contain any digit that the clues rule out? Have you placed a digit exactly where a clue says it cannot go? Does each statement match the exact number of correct digits in your answer?
A combination that fits four clues but fails the fifth is not the solution. Every statement must work at the same time.
If you are stuck, the hints below reveal the reasoning gradually. Read one, return to the puzzle, and see whether you can finish it yourself.
Hint One: Start With the Clue That Eliminates the Most
You do not have to solve the clues in the order they appear. Start with the statement that gives you certainty immediately.
738 says that none of its digits are correct.
That means 7, 3, and 8 do not appear anywhere in the code. Cross them out wherever they occur in the other clues.
Now look again at 780. With two of its digits eliminated, which digit must remain?
Hint Two: Find the Position of Zero
The clue 780 tells you that one digit belongs in the code but is in the wrong position. Since 7 and 8 are already eliminated, that digit must be 0.
Because 0 appears in the third position of this clue, it cannot be third in the actual code.
Next, look at 206. Its two correct digits are both in the wrong positions. You already know that 0 is one of the correct digits, so it cannot occupy the second position shown here.
Zero cannot be second or third. Only one position remains.
Try returning to 682 with that information before reading further.
Ready for the Solution?
At this point, you can establish the first digit, use it to identify the third, and then solve the middle position with the remaining clue.
If you have an answer, check it one final time. The full explanation follows below.
The Correct Code Is 042
The lock opens with 042.
Here is how each step leads to that combination.
Step 1: Eliminate 7, 3, and 8
The clue 738 says none of the digits are correct. Therefore, 7, 3, and 8 cannot appear in any position.
Step 2: Establish That Zero Belongs in the Code
In 780, exactly one digit is correct but incorrectly placed. With 7 and 8 eliminated, 0 must be the correct digit.
It is shown third, so the actual code cannot end in zero.
Step 3: Put Zero in the First Position
The clue 206 contains exactly two correct digits, both in the wrong positions. Zero is already known to belong in the code, and this clue places it second.
Zero therefore cannot be second. We also know it cannot be third, so it must be first.
The code now reads: 0 _ _
Step 4: Put Two in the Third Position
Return to 682. Exactly one digit is correct and correctly positioned.
Eight has been eliminated. Six cannot be the correctly positioned digit because it appears first, and the first position is already occupied by zero.
Therefore, 2 must be correct in the third position. Because this clue contains exactly one correct digit, 6 is also eliminated from the code.
The code now reads: 0 _ 2
Step 5: Identify the Middle Digit
Finally, examine 614. Exactly one digit is correct but in the wrong position.
Six has been eliminated, leaving 1 or 4.
If 1 were correct, it would have to appear somewhere other than the second position shown in the clue. However, the first and third positions are already occupied by 0 and 2. There is nowhere for 1 to go.
That leaves 4. It appears third in the clue, so placing it second satisfies the requirement that it be in the wrong position.
The complete code is 042.
Check the Answer Against Every Clue
- 682: Only 2 appears in 042, and it is correctly placed third. This clue works.
- 614: Only 4 appears in 042. It is second in the answer rather than third in the clue. This clue works.
- 206: Both 2 and 0 appear in 042, but each occupies a different position from the clue. Six is absent. This clue works.
- 738: None of these digits appear in 042. This clue works.
- 780: Only 0 appears in 042, and it is first rather than third. This clue works.
All five statements agree with the answer. Each position has been established through elimination, leaving no alternative combination that satisfies the rules.
Why This Puzzle Can Be Tricky
The first clue can tempt you to choose 6 immediately because it appears at the beginning. But that clue alone does not tell you which of its three digits is correct. You need information from the other statements before deciding.
Another common mistake is treating “one digit is correct” as “at least one digit is correct.” That would change the puzzle. Here, the counts are exact, so the other digits must be excluded.
The final challenge is remembering that a lock code can begin with zero. This is a sequence of three digits, not a three-digit whole number.
The useful approach is to establish what you know, eliminate what cannot work, and check every remaining possibility against the rules.
Did You Crack It Before the Reveal?
Whether you solved the code immediately or needed a hint, the satisfying part is seeing how the clues fit together. A statement that seems incomplete on its own becomes decisive when combined with another.
You can share the puzzle with a friend without revealing the answer and compare your approaches afterward. Did you both begin with 738, or did one of you find a different route through the clues?
Whatever your zodiac sign, the same five clues lead to the same answer: 042. The zodiac theme is simply a playful way to present the challenge; solving it depends on logic, not astrology.
