Cancer is often associated with caregiving.
You may be the person who remembers birthdays, checks whether everyone arrived home safely, notices when someone becomes unusually quiet, or offers help before anyone asks.
Caring for people can feel natural.
The problem begins when another person starts treating your care as an obligation.
Watch What Happens When You Say No
One of the simplest ways to understand a relationship is to observe what happens when you establish a reasonable boundary.

Maybe you cannot help them today.
Maybe you already have plans.
Maybe you need an evening alone.
Maybe you want to spend time with other friends.
Maybe an opportunity requires you to prioritize yourself for once.
A healthy person might feel disappointed occasionally. That is normal.
But disappointment and punishment are different things.
If someone becomes cold, withdraws affection, creates another crisis, starts an argument, or reminds you of everything they have ever done for you whenever you say no, pay attention.
You Should Not Need Permission to Have Your Own Life
This type of pressure can develop gradually.
At first, you simply change one plan to make someone happy.
Then you cancel another.
Eventually, you begin thinking about their reaction before making ordinary decisions.
You consider going somewhere and immediately wonder:
“Will they be upset?”
You think about taking time for yourself and wonder:
“Will they think I don’t care?”
You receive an exciting opportunity and your first thought becomes:
“How am I going to explain this to them?”
When another person’s potential reaction becomes the filter through which you make normal life decisions, it is worth examining why.
Love Should Not Require Constant Proof
